From Teamwork to Dream Works

According to Wikipedia, teamwork is "work done by several associates with each doing a part but all subordinating personal prominence to the efficiency of the whole". So what makes a team really work? What turns your team into a dream team? We will look at how to determine if your staff is a team, how to form a team, and how to get your team to create your dreams.

Is Your Staff a Team?

You might think that because you grouped 5 people together and called them a team that they are in fact a team. However, that couldn't be further from the truth. The reality is that creating a great team takes proper assessment and evaluation of not only the members of the possible team but also their roles and personalities. In a college psychology class, I remember that one of the most financially sound professions in the field was something known as Industrial Psychology. This specific field deals with evaluating employees within a company to determine who would work best together in team structures. So the first step is to determine who best fits into the team you are trying to create. The next step is to make sure they all have a passion for the project that they are being assigned to. A team without passion for its outcome is also not a team.

How to Form Your Dream Team

Now that you have evaluated your potential team members, it’s time to put them all together and see how they really interact with one another. Do they start conversations on their own? Do they naturally converge with one another? A great team has a single leader with no opposition. Have two dominant, alpha, leader types in a group will immediately create havoc for your project. Be sure to choose people wisely. This requires making sure each person has a purpose in the team and that no member’s purpose overlaps with another.

Creating Your Dreams

Passion has a lot to do with how successful we are. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said "Passion rebuilds the world for the youth. It makes all things alive and significant." That holds truth with your dreams and work. If your team doesn't posses the same passion as you then your work and projects will be insignificant and lifeless. Pick your team with passion in mind and make sure they are passionate about the project. That passion will go a long way toward turning your dreams into reality.
