Seeing Opportunities in Problems

As a business owner or manager it can be quite difficult to pull yourself away from problematic issues with your clients, your staff, or even within yourself. However, it is our perception that means everything in this crazy world we live in. The best we can do is to see opportunities in the flaws and problems of the day.

Avoiding Problems Doesn't Fix Them

Some people believe that simply avoiding problems by leaving the room or conversation can help them overcome and rise above. However, it is more likely that kind of behavior would set off anger or resentment in the eyes of the others involved in that conversation. Walking away doesn't actually resolve an issue, just as sweeping dirt under the rug doesn't make your living room any cleaner. True resolution only comes from assessing the problem, creating a plan of resolution (not attack), and taking action according to that plan.

Creating a Solid Plan

If you have read this blog or any others that I have had the privilege of writing for, you have likely seen me posting one of my favorite quotes that in short form says "Do not start the day until it is finished on paper." This exemplifies what we are talking about with creating a solid plan of resolution. Why a plan of resolution and not a plan of attack? Well, how we perform and how we think are strongly determined by how we speak to ourselves and others. If we come up with a plan of attack, that has a negative and violent connotation to it. So, we lean to the positive side and instead say a plan of resolution. Creating this plan is easier than you might think. The key here is to see the positive side of each situation and repeat just that piece of it. That is what goes into your new plan.

The Silver Linings

These silver linings are the difference between successful people and their conterparts. Being able to see the good things in people, situations, and in life itself gives us the ability to make things happen the way we want them to. Seeing our successes and removing our failures can mean huge strides in how our business, and our personal life, perform in the long run.

The next time you are faced with a difficult situation, just remember to step back, take a deep breath, and look for the best parts of that moment. Then extract them and recreate them over and over. In no time, you will see a paradigm shift in everything.
